| ADVENTURES IN THE HIGH COUNTRY of Platoro,
Colorado! Join us at Gold Pan for a Great Outdoor Experience! |
|
|
Located in South Central Colorado, Platoro (elevation 9900 feet) is nestled in the Rio Grande National Forest and surrounded by the San
Juan Wilderness. Founded in the late 1800's as a mining town, Platoro is a combination of the Spanish words for Silver (Plata) and gold (oro). Both were once mined in
this picturesque mountain setting. Today, the treasures of the upper Conejos River canyon are the vast mountain peaks (ranging from 9000 feet to over 13,000 feet), numerous
trails, lakes, and streams. The highest manmade resevoir in North America, is the Platoro Resevoir at 10, 034 feet and is just 2 miles above the town of Platoro.
